However, a month prior to her travel dates, the tragic Marawi bombing crisis occurred, which prompted her to realize that she had a unique opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the Marawi community. Despite being located halfway across the world in Seattle, WA, USA, Kathreen felt it was crucial to devote her time and effort to raising awareness and providing support beyond her daily routine. By doing so, she hoped to positively impact a significant number of people in the community, particularly the children of Marawi. Mark Paul Samante personally requested to Kathreen Absuelo via email: Initial needs assessment report from our partners: "Needed for evacuation centers: Efficascent oil for weary legs, scarves for women, playmats for cement floors that double as sleeping areas, Cloud 9 chocolate mini-bars; pencils, sharpeners, crayons for child evacuees also welcome for therapeutic art and play.” Upon arriving in Davao, she had the pleasure of meeting with the chairperson of the University Community Engagement and Advocacy Council (UCEAC), Mark Paul Samante, and the Administrative Associate, Mr. Dadong Gumatao, to deliver the goods. The individuals inquired about the possibility of arranging a meeting with Kathreen to meet with Fr. Joel E. Tabora S.J., President of Ateneo de Davao, to which she graciously acceded. Efforts to assist the refugees affected by the Marawi Crisis were met with great generosity and support. Thanks to the contributions made by individuals and organizations alike, the aid was able to reach those who were most affected by the crisis. Every single donation received, no matter how small, played an integral role in ensuring that the refugees received the assistance they needed. The funds were utilized efficiently and effectively, with a high level of transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
